Should you measure AI visibility per product line?
Yes, once you sell into more than one category, because pooling the categories together is what erases the difference between where you lead and where you don’t exist. A multi-engine Collimer benchmark scan found a chat and messaging-infrastructure SaaS company scoring 84% visibility in its core chat category and just 7% in the AI-agents category it recently expanded into, on the same five-engine panel. Averaged across all five categories the company competes in, that split lands in the high-30s to low-40s, a number that reads as “middling but present” instead of what it actually describes: category leadership in two lines, and near-total absence in three others.
What a category-level blind spot actually looks like
The full split, same brand, same scan, same five-provider panel (ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, Grok): 84% visibility in chat and 80% in feeds, the company’s original, best-known lines, against 12% in video, 8% in moderation, and 7% in AI agents, three lines the same company has since expanded into. Nothing about the 12/8/7% numbers means the newer product lines are bad. It means AI engines aren’t citing this brand when someone asks about those categories, and a competitor already active there is getting cited instead.

Why pooling hides it
An average only tells you about the middle. Five category scores that range from 7% to 84% average out to something in the high-30s to low-40s regardless of which categories those numbers belong to, and the pooled figure carries no marker of which end of that range any single line is sitting on. A reader, or the company’s own marketing team, looking only at the pooled score has no way to see that the growth product lines are being decided by AI engines in favor of category-specific competitors, not because of any brand-wide weakness.
This is the same shape of problem a pooled score hides across query type: a strong branded rate can sit next to a near-zero problem-led rate in the same report, and averaging the two produces a number that describes neither. Here the axis being pooled away is product line instead of query type, but it’s the same underlying rule: a visibility score is only informative at the grain it was measured at, and pooling across a real dividing line produces a number that is technically accurate and practically misleading. A score that also silently drops an engine mid-scan has the same tell: the composite still looks whole, right up until you ask what it’s actually made of.
How to check your own product lines
- Split your own scan by category before trusting the pooled number, the same way measuring AI visibility properly already argues for holding the engine set and prompt panel fixed, applied one level down: request the per-category breakdown, not just the average across it.
- If you’ve shipped a second product line in the last year, don’t assume the score carries over. A brand’s AI-visibility score is not evenly distributed across everything it sells; a newer line usually starts near zero and has to earn its own citations, the same way the original line once did.
- Watch the spread, not just the average. A pooled score built from categories that range from single digits to the 80s is hiding more than a tighter spread would.
- If you’re still single-product, treat this as a pre-launch check, not a current problem. The value is in measuring per line before you ship the second one, not discovering the gap after a competitor already owns the category.
