Why your Copilot visibility number is an estimate, not a measurement
Microsoft Copilot has no public API, so any Copilot AI-visibility number, ours included, is a proxy synthesized from web-search snippets, not a direct reading. What that means for how much weight to put on that one number.
Microsoft Copilot has no public API. Every Copilot visibility number you’ll ever see, including ours, is a synthesized estimate, not a direct reading of what Copilot actually told a user. That’s a different kind of measurement than the other four numbers sitting next to it in the same report, and most reports don’t tell you which is which.
Why Copilot can’t be measured directly
ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Claude can all be queried through a documented API: send a prompt, get back the response an equivalent user would see. Copilot has no equivalent public endpoint. There is no request you can make that returns “what Copilot said.” So any tool reporting a Copilot number, Collimer’s methodology included, is doing something structurally different: pulling Bing and web-search snippets and composing them through an LLM into a Copilot-style answer, then measuring that.
It’s a reasonable approximation. It is not the same instrument as the other four.
What “proxy” actually means here
The mechanism matters because it changes what the number can tell you:
- Direct engines (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude): the response you measure is the response Copilot’s users would actually receive, retrieved the same way, every time.
- The Copilot proxy: the response is reconstructed from search snippets composed by a different model into a Copilot-shaped guess. It can drift from Copilot’s real behavior in ways a direct API call can’t: a different snippet mix, a different composing model, a different day’s search index.
Neither number is wrong to show. But they answer slightly different questions, and a report that lists all five engines on one line, with one confidence treatment, is quietly asking you to trust a proxy exactly as much as a direct reading. Don’t.
What to do with a Copilot number
Read it as a directional estimate, not a scored data point. If your other four engines tell a consistent story and Copilot roughly agrees, treat that as corroboration. If Copilot is the outlier, check whether the gap is real behavior or an artifact of the proxy before you act on it. That’s the same discipline that applies to any single engine reading taken in isolation.
The honest version of a visibility report says, plainly, which engines it measured directly and which it estimated. If a tool doesn’t tell you that, ask.
