What is GEO? How generative engine optimization differs from SEO
GEO and SEO optimize for different things: SEO targets crawl, index, and rank; GEO targets retrieval and citation inside AI-generated answers. They share some tactics, but the mechanism, and the measurement, is different.
SEO and GEO are not the same thing. SEO optimizes for crawl, index, and rank in a list. GEO optimizes for retrieval and citation inside a generative answer: a fundamentally different outcome.
What does GEO optimize for that SEO doesn’t?
In a traditional search result, winning means a high position in a ranked list. A click follows. The optimization levers are well-understood: crawlability, indexing, link authority, keyword alignment.
In a generative answer, there is no ranked list. The assistant assembles an answer from retrieved passages and presents it in prose. Your goal is not a position; it’s a citation. The levers are different.
- SEO question: Can the crawler find and index my page? Does it rank well for this query?
- GEO question: When the model retrieves content on this topic, does my page pass the citation gate? Does it quote me?
The counterintuitive part
Here is what most people miss: only about 18% of ChatGPT conversations trigger a live web search at all (as of mid-2026, per Search Engine Land). The rest are answered from the model’s training weights: parametric recall, not retrieval.
This means GEO is actually two separate problems:
- Retrieval GEO: what gets retrieved and cited when the engine does go out to the web. Crawlability, content structure, and schema matter here.
- Training GEO: what’s absorbed into the model’s base knowledge before the conversation starts. Harder to influence directly, and harder to measure.
AI vendors run distinct bots for each purpose. GPTBot crawls for training; OAI-SearchBot
indexes for retrieval; ChatGPT-User fetches during live conversations. Blocking one does not
block the others. Your robots.txt decisions have different consequences depending on which
problem you’re solving.
Where GEO and SEO overlap
The objection you’ll hear: “Isn’t GEO just SEO with a new name?” It isn’t; the mechanisms differ, and the evidence differs (controlled studies, not rank correlations). But the tactics do share ground.
Good SEO practice helps on both sides:
- Structured, scannable content with a clear answer up front, the single highest-leverage move, covered in front-load the answer
- Credible, citable sourcing, especially third-party sources, which dominate evaluative queries
- Clean crawlability and proper indexing
If you already do those things, you’re ahead. GEO tells you what else changes and why: the citation gate, the training-vs-retrieval split, the per-engine differences that mean what works on ChatGPT may not work on Perplexity.
How to think about it
Start by separating the two problems. Then measure one at a time. Controlled studies show that adding statistics, quotations, and cited sources each lift generative-engine citation likelihood by 30 to 41%; that’s the retrieval GEO lever. The training GEO lever is slower and harder to instrument.
